Jeonju University, Korea’s First Fair Trade University Accredited ‘Leader in Creating Social Value’

Jeonju University (University President Hoin Lee) has become the first university that receives a fair trade university certificate.
On 16th, Jeonju University was selected as a fair trade certificated university by ‘Fair Trade Towns Korea,’ the Korean chapter of Fair Trade Towns International.
Fair Trade University is a leading university in the spread of fair trade and teaches ways to solve social problems such as poverty and economic inequality to students preparing to become future leaders through fair trade education and campaigns. Oxford University in the United Kingdom was recognized as the world’s first fair trade university in 2003.
In December 2018, Jeonju University declared the promotion of fair trade university and satisfied certification conditions such as the formation of a fair trade committee, securing a fair trade seller, use a fair trade products, education, and campaigns. In particular, all members are joining the social and economic movement through the Living Lab project, social venture test bed, international seminars, special lectures, and internships by opening a social economy convergence major (undergraduate program) and establishing a regional innovation center in February 2019.
The university president of Jeonju University, Hoin Lee said that “Fair trade is a sustainable way of spending that guarantees the rights of marginalized producers and workers. We will educate students on a fair and just system so that they can foster people who create social values and contribute to the development of the community.”
Meanwhile, Jeonju University signed an agreement with Jeonju city and the Fair Trade Towns Korea in September to practice fair trade, and is expected to play a major role in promoting fair trade and active social economy in North Jeolla, Jeonju city, and local communities.
