Selected Jeonju University’s Korean Institute of Humanities as ‘HK+ Support Project’

- Predict a future community of coexistence, the best humanities institute in Jeonbuk region -

Jeonju university’s Korean institute of humanities was selected as HK+ support project in 2018 which is organized by Korea Research Foundation.

HK+ project is designed to establish the humanities research infrastructure and produce the achievement from the world-class research on humanities by supporting the humanities research institute within universities.

Jeonju university’s Korean institute of humanities (director Byun Juseung) will annually receive about 1.18 billion won for the next 7 years, a total of 8.4 billion won, and will push forward a research about ‘alternative of future communities‘ and humanized and popularized business from perspective of the humanities.

Through reconsidering confucianism, the research, which is conducted with the theme of ‘Deterritorialization of confucianism and coexistence of anthropology and future community,’ suggested an alternative for future community to deal with rapid social changes such as family disbandment, population cliff, and the fourth industrialization. In particular, it intended to reflect on the confucian culture that still exists in the de-confucian society from a critical and alternative perspective.

‘The popularization of humanities’ is realized based on ‘Ondara humanities center’ which was newly established in the humanities research institute (director Lee Yongwook). Using the local humanities assets, it will operate local contact lectures, educational programs, humanities lectures for middle and high school students, and humanities lectures for underprivileged group. Through this business, Jeonju university is expected to get closer to the local community.

The head of Korean institute of humanities, Juseong Byun expressed his aspiration by saying that “through HK+ business, we plan to strengthen creative succession of the spirit of liberal arts and our status as an advanced research center in Korean studies.” Then, he continued to say that “we will foster local talent and humanities’ capability through expanding exchanges with domestic and foreign academic institutions and strengthening linked network with the local government.”

Meanwhile, the Korea institute of humanities at Jeonju university has experiences and skills in carrying out various national research projects. It had an experience of forging DB such as confucian scholar data acquisition and translation of collection of works from National Research Foundation of Korea, the academy of Korean studies, Korean studies promotion service, institute for the translation of Korean classics, etc. Since it was selected as the only HK+ business in Jeonbuk region in 2018, it has become the best humanities research institute in Jeonbuk region.
