Architecture Department of Jeonju University, Winning Multiple Prizes in ‘Architectural Design and Architectural Competition’


Jeonju University announced that professors and students of architecture department have proven their skills by winning a number of prizes such as grand, gold, and excellence prizes, in the architectural design and architectural contest on 22th.


Saebo Shim, a professor at Jeonju University, won the Excellent Award in ‘2019 Incheon Metropolitan City Award for Architecture’, and the professor Dongwon Kim won ‘2019 Architectural Award of the Korean Architects Association.’ In addition, a fifth-grade student, Giyeong Yeon received the grand prize in the student category at the ‘20th Jeollabuk-do Architecture and Culture Awards’. In the same contest, a team of students Dongwook Chung, Yeji Lim, and Joonhyuk Kong won the gold prize, and a team of students Green Park, Deokhyun Kyung, and Eunbi Seo won the special prize.


Saebo Shim, who won the Excellent Award with ‘Songlim-dong 42-30 Neighborhood Living Facilities,’ built a neighborhood living facility in Songlim-dong, reflecting the characteristics and charm of the commercial streets of Songlim-dong, which connect Incheon’s main downtown area. Professor Shim’s architecture, which has simple charm in interior and exterior space, was praised by judges as one that conveys happiness to citizens.


Professor Dongwon Kim received the Architectural Award of the Korean Architects Association for his work ‘Bundang Memorial Park Heritage Bongandam.’ Bundang Memorial Park has built an open Bongandam that can blend well with the surrounding natural environment, so that citizens can visit it as often as a park, not a stark and stuffy enshrinement place.


Students also made their mark in the architectural contest. Giyeong Yeon won the grand prize in the student category at the ‘20th Jeollabuk-do Architecture and Culture Awards’ by designing ‘Deck, Dock, Dwelling’. Deck, Dock, Dwelling draws waterways into space and general commercial spaces for fishermen at Gunsan Port to design patchwork and provides a walking deck to expand green space for nearby residents.


Also, the student team of Dongwook Jeong won the gold prize by proposing “compressed city” where various functions can be performed in the city where the phenomenon of coexistence are carried out, while the team of Green Park won the special prize by proposing the bus terminal complex, Termin:all, which adds shopping, transportation, parking, warehouses, and parks.


Yongmin Lim, the director of the Department of Architecture at Jeonju University, said that “The focus of the curriculum is on strengthening students’ working level in the field of architecture by visiting local cities in person and conducting architectural design to suit the city’s culture and living environment.” He also continued to say that “This result is also because of having combined the faculty, curriculum, and students’ creativity with a lot of hands-on experience to produce excellent results.”
