‘Active Undergrad Startups,’ Development of Disposable Toothbrush Coated with Toothpaste in Jeonju University

-Jeonju University, activating startups through business talents fostering program-

College students are realizing their dreams by the commercialization of ideas through the university’s customized startup platforms and total solutions.

Kunwoo Kim (SCU), who graduated from the department of hotel management in February this year, developed a disposable toothbrush coated with natural toothpaste on its bristles. He started the business in 2016 with the slogan “Simplicity changes the world” and is currently actively promoting commercialization with monthly sales of 10 million won.

While in the department of hotel management, he noticed that many toothpaste and toothbrushes left in the guest room were being abandoned in the hotel during his internship in Singapore hotel. Thus, he made an all-in-one toothbrush which is coated with toothpaste to use easily. Since the toothbrush utilizes natural materials to make it possible to brush without water, it receives favorable responses and comments from customers by making it simple and efficient.

He made his idea into a business plan through the support of the university’s customized entrepreneurship education and student startup club, produced the prototype with 40 million won funding from the business support project in Jeonju University as the university leading the establishment of business, and learned know-how of starting a business such as marketing.

CEO Kunwoo Kim said “thanks to Jeonju University, where a platform for personalized startup support was built including from education to commercialization funds and startup care space, the simple idea came to bear fruit.” He continued to say “currently, I am concentrating on expanding commercialization platforms such as exploring overseas markets like Vietnam market.”

In Jeonju University which is concentrating on cultivating youth entrepreneurs with the vision of finding young entrepreneurship stars, Pyeong-Hwa Shin (senior in the department of Fashion Industry) and four other students were selected as student entrepreneurs for 2018 Startup Item Commercialization project and received a total of 200 million won as a support of startup funding to process a business project.

The project of fostering a university leading establishment of a business is conducted in 43 universities across the country in this year. Among them, Jeonju University is the only university in Honam area that has been conducting this project for eight consecutive years since the start of the project in 2011.

Jeonga Ju, the head of the startup support team at Jeonju University, said that “students are embodied in ideas as entrepreneurial commercialization, and the number of student entrepreneurs is increasing every year.” She continued to say that “we will find and foster more college student entrepreneurs to lead the local economy.”

Jeonju University Startup Support System is operating customized startup support programs such as middle and high school foundation education, startup talent selection, startup lecture for college students, startup lecture for general person, startup camp, college student startup club, startup project competition, investment program, and even a follow up support after (preliminary) founder discovery. Also, professors who focus on foundation and founding managers with the expertise in establishing a business are helping college students and (preliminary) founders to succeed.
