With 30 years career in the food service industry, outstanding graduate in the department of food-service industry in Jeonju University

-Won Superstar Award which only 3% of the whole school could win… also top in volunteer service and grade -

There is a notable student who has studied for 4 years and graduates Jeonju university’s department of food service industry even after continuing a career as Japanese cook for 30 years since 1986. The subject of this story is Hak-geun Kim, who was enrolled in 2015 and will graduate early with an outstanding grade in this August.

Mr. Kim is the expert in the food service industry, who is the chairperson of Jeonbuk branch of the Korean association of cook, while works as a supervisor of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Western, and puffer fish license tests, a judge of the K-WACS, and an instructor of the food service industry.

Mr. Kim thought that even though he had the skills and know-how of the field of food service industry, he was a lack of theoretical basis. The field experience was not enough to develop new menus or provide professional services to customers. This academic need had long been felt, but child-rearing and economic issues became the wall to go on without any plan. Eventually, after his youngest son entered the college, he also went to the same college in the department of food service industry.

Mr. Kim had more academic thirst than anyone else. As such, he participated in lectures and practice the most, and did not attend late or absent. Therefore, his grades are in the upper ranks.

Professor Kyehong Min of the department of food service industry said that “Hak-keun Kim was the student who came first, prepared for the practice, and asked the most questions during the class.” He continued to say that “His active participation also had a positive influence on other students.”

Mr. Kim recalled his school life by saying that “the lectures were really helpful. It gave me an opportunity to learn cooking systematically. It became the foundation for developing new menus.”

In addition to study, he actively participated in various activities such as volunteer work and mentoring programs. He became an advisor to students in peer-mentoring program and also participated in various education programs as a leader. He also went to Cambodia in the first semester of 2016 and Myanmar with his son, Dong-hwan Kim majoring in financial insurance, in the second semester of 2017. He participated in more than 200 hours of volunteering services in Korea which is the most hours in the department.

Mr. Kim said “I experienced and learned a lot in the university besides theoretical knowledge,” and continued to say that “I had a time to look around and share with others. I had attended an unforgettable university for four years.”

Mr. Kim finished the university by winning the Superstar Award, which is certified by Jeonju University in the first semester of 2018. The Superstar Award is given to students who participate in various college activities and only less than 3 percent of graduates can receive each year.

Mr. Kim’s challenge is not over yet. For gaining more expertise in the food service industry, he will further study in Jeonju university’s graduate school of Management Administration.
